The reflectors may not reflect light as intended. As such, these lights fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment." Side reflectors that do not reflect properly can reduce the visibility to other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.
